A One-Page Financial Summary for Freelance Work
What this report is, and what it is not
This is a plain summary of what you earned, what you spent and what was left โ the same shape as the profit-and-loss statement a business keeps, drawn from figures you enter. It is useful for your own planning, for a conversation with an accountant, and as a starting point when a lender or landlord asks a self-employed applicant for proof of income.
It is not an audited statement and not a tax return. Nobody has verified the numbers you typed in. A mortgage underwriter will want tax transcripts, 1099s or bank statements, and will work from your net profit after deductions rather than from gross receipts.
How it lines up with Schedule C
Sole proprietors and single-member LLCs report business income on Schedule C. Gross receipts go on line 1, deductible expenses in Part II, and what remains is net profit on line 31 โ the figure that carries to Form 1040 and, separately, to Schedule SE for self-employment tax. Keeping your summary in that order makes filing season shorter.
Note that net profit, not gross revenue, is what almost every downstream calculation uses: self-employment tax, the qualified business income deduction, retirement contribution limits, and what a lender will credit as your income.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my effective tax rate lower than my bracket?
A bracket applies only to the income inside it. Your first dollars are taxed at the lowest rate and only the amount above each threshold is taxed at the next one, so the average rate across all your income is always below the top rate you reach. Self-employment tax sits on top of that and is calculated separately, on 92.35% of net profit.
Can I use this as proof of income?
It can support an application, but on its own it is a document you produced about yourself. Lenders and landlords generally want something independently verifiable: tax returns or IRS transcripts, 1099 forms, or twelve months of bank statements. Bring this alongside those, not instead of them.
Is anything I enter stored or sent anywhere?
No. The figures stay in your browser and are used only to render the report on your own screen.
