Frequently Asked Questions
How much should I tip in the US?
The standard tip for sit-down restaurant service in the United States is 15% to 20%. For excellent service, 20% or more is customary. For poor service, 10% to 15% is common.
Do I calculate the tip before or after tax?
Traditionally, etiquette dictates that you calculate the tip on the pre-tax amount (the subtotal). However, many people simply tip on the final total for convenience. Our calculator uses the total amount you enter.
Can this tool split the bill?
Yes! Just enter the number of people in your party in the "Split Between" field, and the calculator will instantly show you exactly how much each person owes, including their share of the tip.
What does the round-up toggle do?
The round-up feature automatically increases the tip amount so that the final total (or the final per-person split) is a clean, whole dollar amount. This makes paying with cash or splitting via apps much easier.
Is a tip considered a business expense for freelancers?
Yes! If the meal itself qualifies as a deductible business meal (e.g., a client dinner), the tip is also deductible. However, remember that business meals are typically only 50% deductible under current IRS rules.
