Questions
Why does the effective rate rise with income?
Federal income tax is charged in brackets, so each extra dollar can be taxed at a higher rate than the last. Self-employment tax works the other way at the top: its 12.4% Social Security part stops at $184,500 of net earnings for 2026, which is why the total rate climbs more slowly above about $200,000.
Does this include state income tax?
No. These are federal figures, the same in every state. State tax depends on where you live; each state's 1099 tax calculator adds it.
What assumptions do the figures use?
Single filer, the 2026 standard deduction, the income shown as net profit (after business expenses), no other income, and the qualified business income deduction where it applies. Your own deductions and filing status change the result.
