About these California figures: state tax here is calculated from a compiled 2025/2026 rate table using each jurisdiction's brackets and standard deduction — not from California's own published schedule, and not every entry has been confirmed against it. Treat the result as an estimate and check anything you are relying on with California's revenue department. Federal figures come from published IRS releases and are cited on the pages that use them. What Is a 1099 Tax in California?

No employer withholds tax from a 1099-NEC, so a California contractor settles the whole bill themselves. Worked through on $75,000 of net freelance income, the three pieces come out like this:

  1. Self-employment tax — $10,597: 15.3% covering Social Security and Medicare, charged on 92.35% of net earnings. Federal, so it is the same in California as anywhere else.
  2. Federal income tax — $4,898: what remains after deducting half your self-employment tax and the $16,100 standard deduction, then running the 2026 brackets.
  3. California income tax — $2,351: 3.13% of your gross income once California's brackets and deductions are applied, which is 13% of everything you owe and ranks California 1 of 51 nationally.

That totals $17,846, an effective rate of 23.8%, leaving $57,154 once California has taken its share.

California vs Neighbouring States

Same $75,000 of 1099 income, same federal tax — only the state layer changes. California ranks 1 of 51 nationally.

Nevada borders California and levies no income tax — worth knowing if you are weighing a move, though residency is decided by where you actually live and work, not where your clients are.

1099 Tax FAQ — California

How much should I set aside for 1099 taxes in California?

Budget about 23.8% of your gross 1099 income. At $75,000 that breaks down as $10,597 self-employment tax, $4,898 federal income tax and $2,351 to California — $4,462 every quarter. The share rises with income: 21.1% at $50,000 and 28.8% at $120,000.

What is the California state tax rate on freelance income in 2026?

The top marginal rate is 13.3%, the highest of the 50 states and DC, and 8.4 points above the 4.9427% average top rate. That rate applies only to income in the top bracket: on $75,000 of 1099 income California takes $2,351, about 3.1% of it. This calculator applies the full bracket schedule to your own figures.

Would I pay less tax freelancing from Nevada instead of California?

On state tax alone, yes: $2,351 a year less at $75,000 of income: Nevada charges no income tax against $2,351 in California. Your federal self-employment tax of $10,597 does not change — it follows you to any state. Residency rules decide which state may tax you, not where your clients are.

When are quarterly estimated payments due for California freelancers?

Federal estimates for the 2026 tax year fall on April 15, 2026, June 15, 2026, September 15, 2026 and January 15, 2027 — roughly $4,462 each at $75,000 of income. California runs its own estimated payment schedule for the state portion, about $2,351 a year at this income; confirm the current dates with the California revenue agency before you file.

What does $75,000 of 1099 income actually leave me in California?

$57,154 after federal and state tax, an effective rate of 23.8%. Among California's 3 neighbouring states the same income leaves between $54,236 and $59,505. The figures assume a single filer taking the standard deduction and no business write-offs — deductions push the real number higher.

When are quarterly estimated taxes due for California freelancers in 2026?

Federal estimated payments for 2026 are due April 15, 2026, June 15, 2026, September 15, 2026, January 15, 2027. The IRS expects them if you will owe $1,000 or more for the year. California does not use four equal payments: see its schedule below.

How is self-employment tax worked out in California?

The same way in every state: 15.3% (12.4% Social Security, 2.9% Medicare) on 92.35% of net earnings, with the Social Security part stopping at $184,500 for 2026 and Medicare continuing above it. Half of it is deductible on your federal return. California's income tax is charged separately, on top.

California does not use four equal payments

The Franchise Tax Board requires 30% by 15 April, 40% by 15 June, nothing in September, and the remaining 30% by 15 January. Two thirds of your year's tax is due before the end of June. A freelancer who sets aside an even quarter each time — which is what the federal schedule teaches — is short in April, short again in June, and finds out in January.

The safe harbour, and when it disappears

Pay 90% of what you end up owing for the year, or 100% of last year's California tax, and no underpayment penalty applies. If your prior-year California AGI was over $150,000, that second figure rises to 110%.

There is a cliff worth knowing about. If your current-year California AGI reaches $1,000,000 — $500,000 if married or an RDP filing separately — the prior-year safe harbour is not available to you at all. You must pay 90% of your actual current-year tax, and last year's figure is no protection however large it was.

The two tests look at different years: the 110% threshold at last year's AGI, the $1m cut-off at this year's. A single good year can take the safe harbour away from you in the year it happens.

No estimated payments are required at all if you expect to owe less than $500 in California tax.

California and the QBI deduction

California does not conform to §199A. The 20% qualified business income deduction reduces your federal taxable income and does nothing to your California bill — these calculators apply it federally only. If you have seen a state estimate that looks about a fifth too low, this is usually why.

The IRS postpones these dates for taxpayers in federally declared disaster areas. Check irs.gov for relief covering your region before relying on a date here. Percentages and due dates from the FTB Instructions for Form 540-ES; safe harbour rules from R&TC §19136. Figures for tax year 2026.

Every rate and threshold used on this page is taken from the 2026 IRS publications below, not from estimates. Figures are reviewed when the IRS publishes its annual adjustments.
